Our new Live Oak location has
been exceeding expectations for the last four months, and with its
additions of World class boxing coach Rick Noble, elite fitness trainer
Robert Terrance, Crossfit trainer Kelvin Nivens, and the Cia Paulista
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school lead by Milton Del Carlo and Philipe Lattari,
we are looking to make 2010 the best year ever.
For fifteen years IMS has spearheaded the growth and promotion of MMA in
the Monterey Bay area, and now that we have finally earned the recognition
and popularity of the sport, it is time for the next level with upcoming
co-promotion with PureCombat in Santa Cruz, participation in the new CAMO
MMA league, and a series of grappling and kids events to come this year.
IMS is and has been the only school in town with instructors and students
who have fought in MMA events, and has produced many satisfied students
from those seeking fitness and fun to self defense. We invite and
encourage other schools to get in the game, but unfortunately many have
chosen to cash in on MMA’s new popularity without the proper experience or
credentials. Make no mistake, MMA is a specific skill set which includes
Boxing, Thai Kickboxing, Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, Sambo, and Catch Wrestling.
It is not simply a “mix of martial arts”, and any one or two of these
styles IS NOT Mixed Martial Arts. False advertising and trying to
capitalize on other peoples’ work hurts the integrity of the art and
sport, and we hope to see this trend change.
Team IMS: has
started off the year with a victory by Richard Delfin, who won his debut
cage fight in the new MMA organization CAMO last March. Both in the stand
up, and especially with takedowns, Richard dominated his opponent to a 3
round unanimous decision. Nicely done Rich.
Team IMS will have four of
it’s gladiators back in the cage for “WAR”, the next CAMO event in Salinas
sometime on July 24th. 2008 State Pankration Champ Dustin Moore (125
lbs.),Jr. IMS Instructor John Williams (135 lbs.), Richard Delfin (145
lbs.), and Vyas Noel (175 lbs.).
New Live Oak Facility:
IMS has had a few homes in Santa Cruz over the last fifteen years, but now
we have what can only be described as the most elite martial arts academy
the greater Monterey Bay area has ever seen. 6,000 square feet of indoor
and outdoor training area is getting the finishing touches, and will house
the best team of trainers and coaches all under one roof.
The long and expensive
permit process by a broke and typically business unfriendly Santa Cruz
County, along with Ledyard’s underhanded mission of attrition to acquire
our building have all failed to keep us from opening. Thanks to good
consulting, sleepless nights and a few ulcers by Coach Burns, and
extremely helpful and understanding landlords. Thank you to all those who
helped with moral and advisory support.
MMA Fights in Santa
Cruz: Along with long time IMS friend Al Joslin, the promoter of
Pure Combat fighting organization, we will be co-promoting the first MMA
event in Santa Cruz. Fighters from Santa Cruz will do battle with other
warriors in what we look to be the re-establishment of Santa Cruz’
tradition of being a fight event town.
Junior Monkeys:
IMS kid’s classes have been growing and are expanding in March to include
two more days (check schedule). The mini and Junior monkeys have gone
through the third cycle of belt tests. Congratulations to all
participants, and an extra kudos to those who won additional scholastic
and home awards.
